AAW, South Central Los Angeles

This community outreach was designed to serve minority families with children, focusing on school safety, local crime prevention and community issues.

Through administrative petitions, the AAW/SCLA secured the first ever Safety Transfers for minority children in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in keeping with the 1988 California Constitutional Amendment (Victim's Bill of Rights) which entitles children the right to attend a safe school. This 1989 action sparked the LAUSD to introduce new safety measures in South Central LA area schools and as a result the AAW was invited to participate in a White House conference on Education.
